Body Systems are groups of organs and tissues that work together to perform important jobs for the body. Systems like the respiratory, the cardiovascular, the skeletal,the muscular and the digestive systems require proper care. Here is how to take care of these systems

1. Care of the Respiratory System

Respiratory system is very vulnerable to infection. You should pay attention to coughing, wheezing or nasal condition that last more than a few days.

 

 

 

What it means: 

Respiratory system are organs in the body that are involved in the exchange of gases between you and your environment.

Main parts:

Nasal cavity, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi and Lungs.

Care needed:

  • Keep nasal passage open during respiratory infection or a cold.
  • Avoid blowing your nose too hard
  • Avoid holding back a cough or sneeze
  • Have a regular exercise program. This strengthens the lungs
  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid polluted air

 

2. Care of  the Digestive System

What it means:

Digestive system consists of body parts and organs involved in :

  •  Digestion – This is the physical and chemical breakdown of foods into smaller particles.
  • AbsorptionThis is the passage of digested food into the blood
  • Elimination – This is the expulsion of body waste or undigested food.

Main parts:

Mouth, Teeth, Tongue, Esophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, Large Intestine, Liver, Gall bladder, Pancrease.

Care needed:

  • Eat complete meals at regular intervals throughout the day.
  • Eat a variety of foods that is high in fibre and low in fat.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid eating too much. Eat enough food to satisfy your hunger.
  • Chew your food properly.
  • Avoid eating too fast.

 

3. Care of the Urinary System.

What it means:

The Urinary system consists of systems that are involved in filtering and elimination of the wastes from the blood and body in the form of urine.

Main parts:

Kidney, Bladder, Urethra

Care needed:

  • You should drink plenty of water. Six to eight glasses of water daily
  • Eat balanced diet.
  • Practice good personal hygiene.
  • Do regular check-ups by visiting a doctor. Any changes in urine odour, colour or frequency should be discussed with a doctor.

 

4. Care of the Male Reproductive System.

If you notice any lumps, change in texture or size of testes, thickening of testes, you should report to a doctor.

These signs not necessarily mean cancer but if it is present, it might mean successful treatment due to early detection.

What it means:

Male reproductive system includes organs involved in sperm production and the transfer of sperms to the female’s body during intercourse.

Main parts:

The testes, Epididymis, Urethra, Vas Deferens, Penis

Care needed:

  • Daily shower to clean the penis and the scrotum.
  • Avoid very tight clothing.
  • Protect the groin area and the external reproductive organs during vigorous activities.
  • If you are uncircumcised, practice extra hygiene by washing underneath the foreskin daily.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Perform monthly self – examination of the testes for any signs of cancer.

 

5. Care of the Female reproductive System.

The vagina is a self – cleansing organ but cleanliness is still an important part for keeping it healthy.

After going through puberty, it is normal to have slight vaginal discharge. This is caused by shedding of the cells of the vaginal wall.

What it means:

Female reproductive system consist of organs involved in the production of egg cells (ova), the reception of sperm for fertilization, protection and nourishment of the fertilized ovum.

Main parts:

The Ovaries, Fallopian tube, Uterus, Vagina.

Care needed:

  • Wash the vagina 2 – 3 times daily.
  • Wash the vagina from front to back.
  • Avoid using harsh soap to wash vagina.
  • Products such as deodorant spray may cause irritation because the vagina has sensitive tissue around it.
  • During menstrual period, sanitary napkins and tampons should be changed every few hours.

 

6. Care of the Skeletal System.

Bone cells get the nutrients and oxygen they need as blood circulates in bones.

Skeletal system injuries to bones can be a result of many factors including sports, poor posture, poor diet, viral infection and recreational mishaps.

What it mean:

Skeletal system consist of bones involved in movement , body framework, protection of delicate internal organs, productions of white and red blood cells.

Main parts:

Bones, Cartilage, Ligament, Tendons.

Care needed:

  • Take enough Calcium and Phosphorous  in your daily diet.
  • Engage in regular physical activity to increase bone mass.
  • Use proper equipment and wear proper attire when exercising.
  • Eat lots of vegetables.
  • Ensure your sitting posture is proper. Your back should always be straight.

7. Care of the Muscular System.

The more you use your muscles, the more efficient and strong  they become.

 

What it means:

Muscular system consist of muscles involved in all body movements through contraction or extension.

Main parts:

Smooth muscles, Skeletal muscles and Cardiac muscle.

Care needed:

  • Do regular exercise.
  • Ensure you stretch and warm up before getting to high intensity exercise.
  • Use proper equipment and clothing during exercise.
  • Have a healthy diet.
  • Avoid overworking your muscles.
  • If you get any muscle injury, give the muscle enough rest to heal.

8. Care of the Cardiovascular System.

Your choices and behaviour affect the health of your cardiovascular system. With proper care, some problems can be avoided and can be treated.

 

What it means:

Cardiovascular system is a muscular pumping device that aids in circulation of blood throughout the body.

Main parts:

The Heart, Blood vessels, Blood.

Care needed:

  • Avoid smoking. Nicotine in cigarettes increases blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Limit the intake of foods high in fat, cholesterol and salt
  • A regular exercise program will strengthen the heart and help circulation.
  • Drink more water.
  • Eat healthy diet.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Overweight cause the heart to pump more blood through more blood vessels.
  • Have medical checkups, at least once a month.

 

9. Care of the Eyes

You should never take your sight for granted because it provides the greatest knowledge of the environment.

What it means:

The eye is the organ you use for sight

Main parts:

The Sclera, Choroid, Retina, Iris, Cornea, Pupil, Optic nerve, Suspensory ligaments.

Care needed:

  • Eat right and keep balanced diet.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes.
  • Read and watch television in a well – lighted room
  • Try and avoid direct sun and bright light.
  • Wear protective glasses when engaging in sports that could cause eye injury.
  • Avoid long use of your eyes. Close your eyes during breaks.
  • Have regular eye checkup.

 

10. Care of the Ears

You are aware that the ears are delicate instruments that needs careful maintenance.

What it means:

The ear is the organ you use for hearing.

Main parts:

The Outer ear, Middle ear, Inner ear (labyrinth)

Care needed:

  • Clean the outer ear with a cotton swab.
  • Use ear muffs in cold weather or sudden changes of temperature to prevent infection of the inner ear.
  • Do not insert any sharp item even if it is tickling.
  • Avoid exposure to high intensity noise.

 

11. Care of the Teeth

The teeth are the most vital structures and noticeable contributor to your mouth and face appearance. You can keep your teeth for your entire lifetime if well taken care of.

What it means:

The teeth are the hardest substance in the jaws used to break down food, form words and make facial expressions.

Main parts:

Crown, Neck and Root.

Care needed:

  • Brush regularly after eating and before bedtime. Brush at least twice daily.
  • Take your time when brushing. Don’t rush it.
  • Floss regularly to remove plaque and food particles stuck between teeth. At least once a day.
  • It is best to brush your teeth immediately after taking sweets.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Brush your tongue.
  • Visit your dentist periodically.
